festival and fun

sanook is apparent in the numerous festival all year long thoughout the country. In fact,there's atleast one or sometime two,public holidays every month.The only monthwith out public holidays in Thailand are June and September.
The favorite and biggest festival is songkran[water festival]or the water throwing event celebrating the Thai New Year in mid-April,during the most scorching week of the year.There is no religious signaficance to this festival -it's just a fun,cooling way to usher in the New Year.The whole country can join in.In Bangkok and Chiang Mai,revellers ride ride around in pick up truck with big tank of water and giant water guns to douse all passer-by amidst shrieks of delight.
One of the most beautiful festival is loy-kratong. Celebrated during November's full moon season ,small floral floats made of banana leaves and flowers,decorated with incense and candles,are send with wishes down rivers and streams. it is a lovely sight of behold and strikes a romantic,magical note when celebrated among the moonlit ruins of Ayutthaya and Sukhothai.
Some of the most coloufull festivals are held in the rural northeast ,at the Yasoton Rocket Festival,rocket are launched in wild abandon, accompanied by a raucous parade abounding in giant fertilitysymbols of bringrains to the crops. Another unique event is the Phii Takon Festival,one of the wildest festival held in the northeasthern Loie province. Participant don exquisitely painted 'spirit'masks and carry fertility symbols in a parade.This festival commemorates a Buddhist legend where Buddha is greeted by a gang of spirits upon returning to his hometown,befor reaching enlightenment.
